#1 Kenya Natural farmer story

Kibet Langat runs a farm together with his wife Maurin in Kericho in western Kenya whom we met during a trip in 2020. Kibet has organic farming and knows how to grow to get a good harvest with high quality and with the help of the nature in which he lives. In 2016, Kibet received 130 coffee trees from his parents, and now he has planted more so he has 4,500 trees. They grow at an altitude of 1900-1950 meters and are a mixture of Batian, Ruiru and SL28. This is a berry dried coffee, something new from Kenya, but which we think we will see more of in the future. It is the third year that Kibet makes a coffee on his farm, and the second year that it is exported, and we are proud to be part of the start of his journey.

Coffee Farmer

Kenya

Shortly after we opened there was a bit of press about us and we were on a few local news channels.  After seeing one of the stories, a young farmer called KibetLangat, from Kericho County, reached out to me via email about his cooperative, Kichawir, and his neighbor cooperative, Kamachungwa, and how they have great coffee and would love to work with us. Needless to say, I got a lot of calls and emails like this in the months after we opened and honestly didn't have time to respond to everyone, especially if there wasn't a sample. All I knew about Kericho is that tea grows there because the largest tea brand in Kenya is called Kericho Gold and I knew that Lipton and other large tea brands have massive farms in that area. Kibet was RELENTLESS ... I'm pretty sure he set an reminder on his phone to go off monthly because he would not leave me alone until I finally agreed to meet with the two coops about a year later. When they came to our office, I was refreshed at how willing these guys were to do things differently and not fall into the typical Kenyan coffee farmer rut that I find a lot of farmers in Central have been stuck in. Further, I learned that most of the farmers in this area have only planted coffee within the past 10 years, so the soil is quite fertile and since most of the land had been used as grazing land by settlers, much of is has remained uncultivated since independence. There is huge support from the county government for young people to plant coffee and farm organically and Susan Kikwai, the deputy governor, is also coffee farmer. After my first visit, I fell in love, and was told I was the first muzungu to go there for coffee. I don't know if that is true, but it sure feels like a totally different country then visiting cooperatives in Central. So far, the highest farm I have been on was at 2170 meters above sea level! The Coffee Board of Kenya still claims that no coffee farm in Kenya is above 2000 masl. The Kichawir factory (washing station) is at 0°13'45.1"S 35°24'57.4"E, about a 5-6 hour drive from Nairobi. Most of the farmers here are Kalenjin, who are culturally very different than many coffee farmers in Central who tend to be Kikuyu.
